I’ve been here for a week and to be honest, I am exhausted.

I guess after 3 and a half months of lying in bed, shopping, eating out and very gentle activities, going straight into a full 5 day week including walking to and back from work plus getting used to a whole new environment and role has just been a little too much.

Been sleeping 10-12 hours every day trying to get over the fatigue but the sad truth is that I’m unfit and lacking in stamina. Hopefully by the end of next week I would have toughened up.

I have to.

And So It Ends

After three and a half months away from dentistry, my holiday is officially over. I spent the day packing my bags for my 5 week trip to Sydney for work.

I’ve been thinking about my time away and what I’ve done with it. To be honest, not a whole lot. Lots of baking and reading and eating and plain enjoying life. But personal development wise? I’m uncertain.

My new phase in life begins, and I don’t know what is in store. I can only hope it brings more good things.

His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman

I finished the 3 book series in the course of 3 days. At first I did it dutifully – it was on the booklist and I wanted to get through it. But by the middle of the third book I was in the magical world the writer had lured me into.

Will and Lyra fall in love (predictably) but in the end are forced to live the rest of their lives in separate worlds. I have to admit I shed a few tears over the tragedy. Love was something that had always confused me. This book made the pain of separation almost unbearable.

Life is complicated.

I’ll be back at work in less than 2 weeks time and the first thing they’re going to do is send me to Sydney for 5 weeks where I’ll be meeting the folks over at the HQ and setting up a dental practice. Yes, that’s going to be my job.

I’ve been to Sydney several times in my life, but never for this long. It will be an interesting experience no doubt – my only regret is that I will have to leave my basil plant behind and it is probably going to die in my absence. Other than that, I have nothing holding me back in Melbourne. So Sydney here I come!!

These 3 and a half months away from work has been an experience. I learnt a lot about myself but also a lot about life. They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger (reiterated by Kelly Clarkson). And it’s true. I dream in colour and I do the things I want.

I have never been this happy in my entire life.

 

The Act Of Sharing

I was listening to a talk show on the radio and the presenter was saying that his wife had assumed that it was okay to drive his brand new car for the day and it was not even up for discussion. She just did it. He was saying it was hard for him to let her do that and the female population promptly called up the show and shamed him for being so selfish.

I have to say that I too, do not like sharing certain things. For one, I don’t understand how there are couples out there who share a toothbrush. I won’t even share a towel with my partner – I find it somehow a huge breach in personal space and hygiene. I also like my own bathroom, sink, toothpaste, books, digital toys… okay. Maybe I don’t like sharing. I guess I’m so used to having my own things because I’ve been doing things myself for so long that it’s hard to get out of it.

Anyway. Back to the presenter and his wife. I don’t think I would even dream of driving my hypothetical husband’s car. For one, he probably sees it as his second wife, if not his first. And for two, I do not want to be held responsible for any possible damage that I may cause should I choose to drive it. I may want to drive it a little for a taste of it, but certainly not without him and I wouldn’t even be upset if he said no. Totally understandable. It’s his baby he bought it he wants it for himself.

In return, don’t expect me to lend you my toothbrush.

Kite Flying

It was a beautiful day in Melbourne yesterday and I took out my tiny little kite (a present from a friend) out for a spin.

It was such an exhilarating activity, so simple yet so satisfying and cheering. I couldn’t stop laughing. For a few minutes, I am carefree and innocent.

Half an hour later back at my apartment I realised that I had left my phone on that bench. Made my way back to the beach and happily, it was right where I left it. In many ways, I am incredibly lucky.

Changing Times

I dreamt that I was in a bookstore, flipping through books. Every page was blank in every single book. I guess that is an accurate representation of how I feel – my impending life is an unwritten book with no answers. I don’t know what lies ahead and that is both liberating and terrifying at the same time.

An old friend from abroad came to visit me over the weekend. It was fun to hang out again and catch up. Usually I feel liberated and young again when we meet, but this time I felt quite aged. When we were young, we would laugh and chat about inconsequential fluff of no weight or meaning with the freedom and callousness of youth. The future was something that wasn’t really a big deal – whatever happens, happens. Now, the topics are sombre – talks about work, commitments, relationships. We now have obligations to fulfil and decisions to make in an attempt to create the best possible future for ourselves.

Anyway, that’s that. Today I’m going to the beach and will be attempted to fly a tiny little kite the size of the palm of my hand.

 

 

Fifty Shades

So I bought Fifty Shades Of Grey in Australia about 2 weeks ago and it was a lovely edition – smooth cover, nice and thick pages, pliable book that reduces the risk of damaging the spine. Lovely.

Decided to buy the other 2 from Book Depository because I couldn’t get a hold of it here (or so I thought) but it’s come and the book has a reflective cover and is just.. it just doesn’t match!!!

Then I head to K-Mart today and there it is, in the edition that I love. Gargghh!

Excuse me while I hand these books to other people because I refuse to have mismatched sets of books. It’s insufferable.

Do I sound insane?

Sista’s Cafe, Fawkner Park

My apartment is just a stone’s throw away from Fawkner Park and I’ve walked past this cafe several times. It’s right next to the tennis courts on the Northwest end of the park with a very homely feel to it.

It was just about 2 hours from my dinner engagement but I decided that I could not pass up the opportunity to have a ham, cheese and tomato toastie. I absolutely love this combination – can’t get enough of it! This cafe did it very well – well buttered and toasted with just the right amount of everything.

Coffee however, was average. Still – worth a visit if you’re in the vicinity.

Life Is A Box Of Chocolates

One of my favourite things in life is packaging. Whenever I go shopping, I have to confess that whenever the assistants ask if it’s a gift, I say yes. Because they’ll gift wrap whatever it is beautifully and I just love it. Anyway, it is a gift – from me to me! Sad life aside, I had the pleasure of shopping and wrapping my friend’s engagement present last week and here it is:

Net A Porter (one of the most dangerous online stores) sends your purchases wrapped up beautifully in these black boxes to your front door. Decided to recycle one of mine for this occasion. Prettied it up with some white ribbon and a matching black card.

And the present itself – a collection of various chocolates from the various chocolate stores in Melbourne plus a couple of my own baked efforts. I had so much fun shopping for it.

Now, onto the next project…
